Purpose:
Hill Country Area Crime Stoppers, Inc. is a non-profit volunteer citizen directed
organization founded on the principle that someone other than the criminal has information
about a crime. Our goal is to generate Anonymous Tips from the communities and empower the
public by showing them that they can make a difference. We provide a 24-hour, bilingual
toll-free tip line 1-866-756-TIPS (8477) to the public and anonymity as the shield of
protection given to callers, who are eligible for cash rewards if they provide viable
information about a crime. These rewards come through the 33rd Judicial District from
defendants placed on community supervision. The idea is to allow the criminal to help pay
for a system that assists in the criminal's apprehension rather than use tax revenues or
state monies. $8700.00 in rewards was for the year 2004, and as of December 31, 2005, we
have paid out $10,675.. The Board meets monthly to process any eligible rewards for
anonymous tipsters that helped solved a crime, review new methods of advertising our
program and most importantly, our Crime Stoppers Hotline # 1- 866-756-TIPS (8477). This
Board of Directors is responsible for setting policy, raising the day to day operational
funds, determining the amount of reward payments, acting as trustee of funds, and
maintaining liaisons with the media, law enforcement and the public. Our Program is
certified by the Texas Crime Stoppers Advisory Council, Office of the Governor, Criminal
Justice Division. In 2005, local Texas Crime Stoppers Programs provided information that
lead to the arrest of nearly 7,766 suspects and cleared more than 10,415 offenses;
recovered over $4.4 million in property and seized more than $19.6 million in narcotics;
seized 319 weapons on school campuses; and paid over $1.6 million in local cash
rewards. During program year 2005, the Crime Stoppers programs trained over 1,000 local
volunteers, officers, teachers and students; operated a "1-800" number at the
state level for TIPS and information; and received TIPS that led to the arrest of two
"Texas Top Ten Fugitives".
